A scrooge and a humdrum

opportunities.jpgIn my 5am talk with 84 year old entrepreneur, Eduard, he told me of a “vrek”, an Afrikaans word with a combinational meaning between a scrooge and a humdrum.

Eduard Pelzer was a true philanthropist so it was strange to me that he would use such a harsh term to describe people – especially people that he was involved with for years.

“Vrek” he said “are people who are only living for themselves.  An entrepreneur must be an independent thinker BUT entrepreneurship is about taking other people with you on your journey”.  If your entrepreneurial talents are only to enrich yourself then Eduard thought it was a waste.

Can it be that when an entrepreneur starts to narrow his focus only to his own egocentric reality that he sacrifices the unique and sought-after ability to identify new opportunities?

  2. uiteindelik! What a waste!
