We were made to make meaning
April 23, 2008 – 3:46 pmAccording to Frankl the highest level of functioning for human beings is when they are intentionally making meaning in life. When humans are making meaning they are experiencing the rewards and satisfaction that life can offer.
He believed that only a small minority of humans achieve this level of development because it takes courage and boldness to be optimally human.
Some areas where one can make meaning is:
- To have a future directedness, to reach out beyond a mere day-to-day existence and to embrace the future.
- To view ones work as a calling as a way to make a worthwhile contribution and to bring meaning to life.
- To have a zestful experience of life. To be receptive to the experience of the good, the beautiful and the genuineness that life has to offer.
- To have meaningful encounters with other people.
